Olbermann Disses Mearsheimer and Walt Critique

On the War Without End forum, Keith Olbermann, darling of the corporate media, dismisses the John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt paper on the Israel Lobby as mere “trivia” and “falsely predicated,” whatever that means. Olbermann’s brief comments are in response to a long email sent by James Morris, who posted Olbermann’s response on the forum.

Olbermann’s response is indicative—the corporate media has all but ignored the study and some have gone so far as call the two esteemed academics raving antisemites. The Anti-Defamation League has called the well-researched paper “a 41-page, amateurish and biased critique of Israel, American Jews, and American policy.” It is interesting the ADL would declare “[n]owhere in evidence is a sense of complexity, balance, an examination of the variety of factors that cause an event, or of putting individual comments in perspective—all the appropriate tools for a serious piece of scholarship or journalism.” Meanwhile, corporate hacks who pass for journalists, and this apparently includes Keith Olbermann, do not evince “a sense of complexity, balance, an examination of the variety of factors” in regard to the issues raised by Mearsheimer and Walt—in fact they ignore the issue entirely, as should be expected, as NMC and MSNBC are, like most corporate media outfits, completely biased on the issue of Israel and its political stranglehold over the government.

As Steven J. Sniegoksi notes, while the “Mearsheimer-Walt essay was largely ignored by mainstream American media outlets, it did ignite a firestorm among the pro-Zionist media after the publication of the LRB [London Review of Books] version,” noting that the neocons over at David Horowitz’s Frontpage, in particular Lowell Ponte, consider the study “The New Protocols of the Elders of Zion,” an assertion so absurd as to be an instance of political surrealism.

Mearsheimer and Walt “accurately identify the neocons as the driving force for the war on Iraq, and they develop their argument to that end in a sophisticated, step-by-step fashion, showing that the 9/11 attacks enabled the neocons to gain a dominant position in the Bush regime so that they could implement their pre-existing war agenda,” Sniegoksi explains. “Presumably the neocons developed their war agenda with the intention of influencing American policy; but now that its major aspects have been adopted by the Bush administration, they are denying the connection, and they don’t like it when anyone brings up the record.”

Even now, as the Iraqi quagmire sluggishly works toward its disastrous conclusion, and the neocons plot the decimation of Iran, the corporate media is unable and unwilling to examine the record, instead attributing U.S. involvement in Iraq to “failed intelligence,” as instructed in Pentagon and White House hand-outs.

Serious discussion will not be allowed, at least not by the likes of Keith Olbermann and NBC, a corporation owned by General Electric, one of the world’s top three producers of jet engines, supplying Boeing and Lockheed Martin, both intimately involved in lucrative business deals selling fighter jets and attack helicopters to Israel, hardware used primarily to slaughter Palestinians, another verboten subject for the corporate media.

Olbermann may stand in as the current darling of the libs, so desperate for a corporate media personality to turn on the Bush administration, but when the rubber meets the road he is basically a shill for the Israel Lobby and ultimately the neocons.

Ann Coulter and the reactionary hate choir may take Olbermann to the cleaners for his “idiotic conspiracy theory,” as Coulter deems it, that the neocons filched the 2004 election (actually, Olbermann talked about voting irregularities, not theft) but when it comes to criticizing the Israel Lobby, Olbermann is on the same page as Coulter and the neocons.

For Olbermann and his bosses, selling our government down the river to Likudites, who engineered the Iraq invasion and are in the process of engineering aggression against Iran, is mere “trivia… falsely predicated,” thus revealing, once again, the corporate media is faithfully watching the backs of the neocons, an act that should turn the stomach of every American.
