WASHINGTON, March 1 (UPI) -- Paul Wolfowitz, the U.S. deputy secretary of defense, has emerged as a top contender for the job of leading the World Bank.

The White House National Security Council and the Council of Economic Advisers are leading the drive to replace James Wolfensohn, the outgoing World Bank president, with Wolfowitz, one of the chief architects of the Iraq war, the Financial Times said Tuesday.

Others on the U.S. short list include Randall Tobias, former head of drugmaker Eli Lilly and the administration's coordinator on AIDS policy, John Taylor, the top Treasury official for international affairs, and Peter McPherson, president of Michigan State University.
