Viewing Disaster in New Orleans NEWS articles 1 through 12 of 12.
- The officers are alleged to have taken televisions and Rolex watches, as well as not acting to stop other looters.
- Among the rumors that spread as quickly as floodwaters after Hurricane Katrina, reports that gunmen were taking potshots at rescue helicopters stood out for their senselessness.
- I wonder...what the media will do to erase the lurid racist images of sex and violence they have implanted in television viewers' minds. Absolutely nothing is my guess. When the sympathy of ordinary Americans threatened to become seditious outrage at the government's criminal irresponsibility, the plan to demonize the victims went into effect, tapping into long-established myths of black people as rapists and murderers.
- Top officials who managed U.S. reconstruction projects in Iraq have been hired by some of the same big companies that received those contracts and which are now involved in a rush of deals to rebuild after Hurricane Katrina.
- Local governments will likely use eminent domain to rebuild; who will that help? - State authorities are investigating allegations New Orleans police officers broke into a dealership and made off with nearly 200 cars - including 41 new Cadillacs - as Hurricane Katrina closed in.
- When those in power close the public schools, close public housing, fire people from their jobs, refuse to provide access to affordable public healthcare, and close off all avenues for justice, it is not necessary to erect a sign outside of New Orleans saying "Poor People Not Allowed To Return." People cannot come back in these circumstances and that is exactly what is happening.
- In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans authorities are arresting hundreds on minor charges such as breaking curfew or public intoxication, housing them in brutal conditions and then pushing them through a court process that forces most into working on clean-up projects at police facilities...
- "I believe that we can charge the government with criminal neglect," he said. "I firmly believe that if the people on those rooftops (in New Orleans) had blond hair and blue eyes and pale skin, something would have been done in a more timely manner. We charge America with criminal neglect," he said from the steps of the US Capitol.
