Vaseline, Letters from al-Qaeda, and a Pack of Matches

On United Flight 923 from London’s Heathrow to Boston’s Logan, a minion of Hell, a “distraught passenger” was reported in possession of a screwdriver, matches, a tub of Vaseline, and, ominously, “a note referencing al-Qaida.” Suddenly, this dangerous al-Qaedite morphed into a “claustrophobic passenger” who was in fact not a lover of Osama.

However, as if to remind us such incidents require vigilance and a commitment to forever war, two “F-15s were scrambled from Otis Air National Guard Base on Cape Cod to escort the airliner,” according to the Associated Press. Of course, our protectors were taking no chances:

State Police and federal agencies took control of the plane after it landed.

Passengers were taken off the plane and loaded onto a bus, and Naccara said the passengers were being interviewed. Their luggage was spread out on the tarmac, where it was rechecked by security officials and trained dogs.

Since the foiled terror plot surfaced in London last week, airports have tightened security in both the United Kingdom and the U.S. Liquids and gels have been banned from carry-on luggage, and even tighter restrictions are in place in the U.K.

Never mind that the suspects in the British “terror plot” were not in possession of bombs, or airline tickets, and some of them didn’t even have passports.

“I have a feeling that all the Muslims detained in connection with the recent police operation to foil and alleged plot are innocent and will soon be proven so,” writes Azzam Tamimi, director of the Institute of Islamic Political Thought in London. “I also suspect that the entire episode has been deemed, despite its enormous cost, to be of utility to a government that is increasingly out of touch with reality and seriously short of public support and sympathy. I wonder whether this was also intended to smear the image of Islam and the Muslims at the time when the entire world can see that they are the victims of a most unjust world order dominated by the USA and the UK who both support and sponsor Israeli terrorism against Muslims in Palestine and Lebanon and who both oppress the Muslim peoples of Afghanistan and Iraq through direct occupation…. If the government is confident that it has a case against the detained Muslims then have them tried in a court of law. Instead what we are witnessing is a campaign of misinformation that deludes the public into believing that the group is guilty of what is nothing but mere suspicion and most probably false intelligence from the Pakistanis.”

Of course, this is the same Pakistan that worked closely with the CIA to front Islamic terror through Osama bin Laden and “al-Qaeda,” a name borrowed from a database of Afghan mujahideen.

“In the absence of bombs and airline tickets, and in many cases passports, it could be pretty difficult to convince a jury beyond reasonable doubt that individuals intended to go through with suicide bombings, whatever rash stuff they may have bragged in internet chat rooms,” writes blogger Craig Murray, former British ambassador to Uzbekistan. “In all of this, the one thing of which I am certain is that the timing is deeply political. This is more propaganda than plot.”

Likewise, the would-be terrorist toting not one but two letters from “al-Qaeda,” soon to become a simple passenger suffering from an abnormal dread of being in closed or narrow spaces, is more “propaganda than plot,” and is also “deeply political.”

It is yet another squalid aperitif, designed to make us a bit woozy with irrational fear. An aperitif, of course, is an alcoholic drink taken as an appetizer before a meal.

No doubt, soon enough, a big meal of terrorism, designed to get us running around in circles like fear ravaged chickens, demanding the government get the “bad guys”—who are in fact cartoonish apparitions, retarded patsies, or guys buying cakes before engaging in suicide missions—will be served.
