Above is an image of the map T. E. Lawrence presented to the British cabinet in 1918 of the region known at that time Mesopotamia (click on the image to enlarge). (Interestingly Kurdish region marked as: ?)

What Churchill later made of this map in Cairo conference March is: A "Mesopotamia" to secure the British Empire from the Turkish and Russian threats

What the official story doesn’t tell is the following:

Although when Iraq was under the Ottoman Empire was divided into three regions (Mosul, Baghdad and Basra) but Iraq existed in the notion of the provinces residents and Baghdad was the center of the region.

Recently the US is trying to disassemble the same country assembled century ago by the British colonials, read Robert Fisk: unknown Americans’ are provoking civil war in Iraq

The US wants to play this as it’s the Iraqi initiative and an Iraqi choice (an ethic government, shuttering Iraqi powerful voices, calls for unity like Al-Sadr…etc).

As for us Iraq, If the Americans plan succeeded or not we can forget the powerful, united central state of Iraq we knew before, what remains is divided, ethic, sectarian entities formally known Iraq.

The voice of Democratic imperialism

Not to be confused with democratic imperialism, which doesn't exist.

"America must...choose a third way...

The idea...is to maintain a united Iraq by decentralizing it, giving each ethno-religious group — Kurd, Sunni Arab and Shiite Arab — room to run its own affairs, while leaving the central government in charge of common interests. We could drive this in place with irresistible sweeteners for the Sunnis to join in, a plan designed by the military for withdrawing and redeploying American forces, and a regional nonaggression pact."

- Democratic Senator and Presidential contender Joe Biden

The idea that Iraqis and not Americans should decide the future of Iraq no more occurs to people like Biden now than it did before the invasion. To him, and the rest of the American ruling class, this is just simple droit du seigneur.
